History

Back in 1973, Azazel contacted Lucifer after offering "a bunch of nuns" for him to pierce the veil. Lucifer gave detailed directions for the plan to free himself from the Cage to Azazel, who then started implementing it. He visited young teens, making deals. He would fulfil his part of the deal, and only say that he would drop by in 10 years, never specifying exactly why. Then in 1983, after the 10 year restriction, he visited each deal maker, dripping demon blood into their baby's mouth on their 6 month birthday. Occasionally he was interrupted by the mother hearing cries from the nursery. When this happened, he would hang her on the ceiling, slice open her stomach, and set her on fire to kill her. When the children turned 22, each one of them started manifesting powers, one for each child. Several began to exercise their power, and increased. The plan after that was to have a competition to eliminate all but one finalist, who then was to open the devil's gate with the Colt and free Lilith. Killing Lilith was the final seal to free Lucifer, and only the finalist could do it on demon blood. Once Lucifer rose, he would ask the finalist for permission to take his vessel to walk free on the earth.

For an unknown reason, Azazel started a next generation, after the first generation turned 22. Rosie Holt was one of this next generation, which included some in Arizona, New Jersey, and possibly California. Since Azazel showed up at Palo Alto, California, before Jessica died, he may not have bled into a baby's mouth then.

Sam was the first known child, with the visit from Azazel at his sixth month birthday, dropping demon blood into his mouth. (All Hell Breaks Loose (Part 1)) His mother Mary interrupted, and she ended up killed while the nursery burned. Sam was saved by his family. (Pilot) His family became hunters. Sam manifested death visions related with Azazel after he turned 22. Once, when panicked, Sam manifested telekinesis in moving a dresser.

Max's mother was also killed when he was six months old. It is assumed Azazel visited Max's nursery as well, dropping demon blood into his mouth. Max developed telekinesis after he turned 22. He saw it as a gift, and used it against his abusers to try to stop being afraid in Nightmare. Sam Winchester had visions of each time Max killed, or tried to kill, and came to stop him. Eventually Max realized he would never stop being afraid, and used his gift to shoot himself.

Rosie turned six months old when Azazel visited her nursery in Salvation. Sam received a vision, and therefore he and Dean were there to stop Azazel, although the nursery caught fire. It is unknown if Azazel was able to carry out his plan.

Andy's adoptive mother died in a nursery fire when he was six months old. After he turned 22, he found he was able to tell people to do things. He decided he only needed a few things, and asked for what he wanted. Sam's visions of people being told to kill themselves convinced him that Andy was the culprit in Simon Said. Andy told Sam to go away, but Sam proved immune to Andy's mind control. However, his twin brother Ansem was the one killing people. Andy shot him to save his girlfriend and Dean from dying.

Ansem's foster mother did not die in a nursery fire, breaking the pattern. After he turned 22, the yellow-eyed man came to him in his dreams and told him things. He changed his name to Webber and found his twin brother. He killed everyone who was keeping him from his brother. At the showdown at the dam in Simon Said, Sam proved to be immune to Ansem's power as his mouth was taped up. Ansem used his mind control to get Andy's girlfriend to do what he wanted, so Andy was forced to shoot him to save her.

Scott's mother also died in a nursery fire when he was six months old. After turning 22, he had migraines, but then he could touch something and electrocute it if he wanted. He did it to the neighbor's cat because the yellow-eyed man told him to in his nightmares. He told Scott awful things he wants him to do, and his plans for Scott and others, to become soldiers in a coming war. He became depressed and paranoid; his father tried therapy. He was murdered by Gordon Walker in Hunted.

Ava had nightmares about Scott dying in Hunted, and another one of Sam dying. She contacted him to try to save him, and ends up helping him find out about Scott. After Gordon fires shots, Sam sends her home to keep her safe. However, she disappears - leaving sulfur and a dead and bloody fiancé.

Lily is a goth from San Diego. After her power activated, Lily accidentally gave her girlfriend a fatal heart attack when she touched her. She closed herself off after that, resenting her power.

Jake Talley left a mom and little sister, joined the army and was stationed in Afghanistan. After turning 22, he started getting headaches, before he found that he could do incredible feats of strength, the first being to lift a vehicle off another guy to save his life. Then he bench-pressed 800 pounds, stone cold calm.

In All Hell Breaks Loose (Part 1), a selection of the Special Children - Sam, Andy, Ava, Jake, and Lily - wake up in the ghost town of Cold Oak, South Dakota. After introductions and explanations of everyone's power, Sam explains about a demon bringing them all together. Jake tries to take off on his own, but an acheri demon attacks. Sam saves Jake, so they all believe demons are real now. Lily wants to leave, but Sam convinces everyone to band together to fight. They split up to look for iron, silver, salt, and any kind of weapon. Lily tries to make a break for it, hearing the acheri demon's laugh. Sam is searching with Ava, who suddenly develops a headache. They join Andy, who has found salt for protection, and Jake. Not seeing Lily, the group hunts for her, finding her dead, hanging by a noose from the water tower. The rest start to gear up for the next attack when Andy realizes he may be able to send a message to Dean telepathically. Sam hands a receipt to Andy to use, and Andy is able to send the throughts of the bell and Sam for Dean to figure out where they are. Jake and Sam talk a bit when they are trying to gather iron bars, and Jake yanks them off easily.

That night, the Yellow-Eyed Demon came to Sam in a dream to explain the competition, to determine the leader of his army. He explains why Jess had to die, and then shows Sam the night he was fed demon blood. Mary recognized the Yellow-Eyed Demon, but he wakes Sam up before that was explained. With Ava missing, Sam and Jake go searching for her but she turns up with Andy back at home base, having control over the acheri demon. The acheri demon kills Andy before leaving. Sam confronts Ava, realizing she got the headache at the time Lily was killed and she is now controlling the acheri demon. She calls to it mentally, but before it can kill Sam, Jake kills Ava by snapping her neck. Sam wants to make a break for it with Jake, but Jake has also had a visit by the Yellow-Eyed Demon. They both cannot make it out alive, so they fight. Jake has the upper hand with his strength, but Sam is able to knock him out. Rather than kill Jake, however, Sam hears Dean's call and staggers toward him. Jake wakes up, grabs the knife Sam had on the ground, and proceeds to stab Sam in the back to kill him. Jake takes off running, followed by Bobby, who is unable to catch him. Sam dies in Dean's arms. Jake wins the contest.

In All Hell Breaks Loose (Part 2), the Yellow-Eyed Demon appears to Jake in a dream, telling him he is the winner of the contest. He threatens Jake's family if he does not do what he wants, and Jake gives in.

Dean, meanwhile, makes a deal with a crossroads demon to bring Sam back to life, but lies to Sam about it. Sam tells Dean about the contest, and they go to Bobby's for help. Ellen shows up, and the hunters come up with a plan to keep Jake from carrying out the Yellow-Eyed Demon's plan. Jake meets the demon at the railroad track. Yellow-Eyes give Jake the Colt, which is a key to open the crypt. Jake wants to kill the demon, who points out how screwed Jake's life is if he does not finish the job but how wonderful life will be when he does. Jakes gives in and heads to the cemetery. When he arrives, Dean, Sam, Ellen and Bobby step out with guns for a standoff. Jake cannot believe that Sam is alive, before causing Ellen to point her gun at her own head to force the others to drop their guns. Jake inserts the Colt, unlocking the crypt, as Bobby and Dean grab Ellen to save her. Sam shoots Jake, killing him. The door to Hell opens, freeing hundreds of demons, including Lilith. As Bobby and Ellen work on closing the door, Dean faces off with Yellow-Eyes, eventually killing the demon but not before the next part of the plan is put into motion.

In No Rest for the Wicked, in trying to save Dean, Sam and Dean go to take out Lilith before Dean's contract comes due. However, time runs out and Dean is killed. Lilith tries to Sam out with a blast of white light, but Sam is immune to her power. Lilith escapes.

With Dean in Hell, Alastair was able to torture him until Dean broke. Dean climbed off the rack and began to torture other souls. With this act, Dean broke the first seal to free Lucifer from the Cage. Castiel, with other angels, came down to Hell to rescue Dean.

Ruby is able to convince Sam to let her close during the last year Dean has alive by promising to help him. After Dean's death, Ruby hooks Sam on demon blood to activate his power of demon exorcising with his mind, promising that as Sam gets stronger he can kill Lilith for revenge. After Dean comes back, Sam is careful with the demon blood, never drinking it while Dean is around. At the end of Criss Angel Is a Douche Bag, Sam goes back to Ruby to drink demon blood to become stronger. Pamela senses Sam exorcise a demon with his mind in Death Takes a Holiday and warns him she can feel what is inside him - that it is not good. When Alastair tries to throw Sam in Death Takes a Holiday, it does not work. Alastair has to flee to escape Sam's exorcism. When Sam does not have enough blood, he grows weaker and cannot exorcise the demons, but after feeding on demon lood Sam grows strong again. Dean catches Sam drinking demon blood, and forces Sam to detox from it.

Detoxing from demon blood brings on severe painful hallucinations, thirst, sweats, seizures, physically being tossed around, and possibly black veins showing. Castiel let Sam out of the panic room, and Sam went back to Ruby. After drinking enough demon blood, Sam takes on Lilith, finally killing her and breaking the final seal. Lucifer is free.

Sam and Dean are rescued from ground zero by being transported to a plane, and the very act of transportation detoxed Sam from the demon blood. Sam still craved the demon blood for some time afterwards, fighting the urge to drink.

In My Bloody Valentine, Sam identifies a demon by listening to the man's heartbeat and smelling it. The Horseman Famine causes Sam to crave demon blood, and he gives in and drinks it. Sam is able to telekinetically throw a demon, and later control demons by pulling them from their hosts before using them to kill Famine. Later, Dean locks Sam up to detox him from the demon blood once more.

Sam comes up with the plan to lock Lucifer back into his Cage by taking him in and jumping into the Cage himself. In Swan Song, Sam must ingest 4 gallons of demon blood to be able to take in Lucifer, which he does. Sam loses the fight in his head against Satan, but with Dean's help on the battlefield Sam is able to gain control once more. Sam jumps into the Cage, accidently also bringing the archangel Michael inside Adam's vessel.

Castiel rescues Sam's body from the Cage, and Sam does not seem to need detoxing.
