Biography

Ellen first encounters Sam in Everybody Loves a Clown, when he shows up in her kitchen with the bar being closed. They come out to the main room to find Jo holding a gun on Dean. After introductions, she realizes John is dead but the boys brush her sympathy off and ask about her offer of help to find the Yellow-Eyed Demon. She introduces them to Ash. Later Sam asks about a file she has behind the bar, which she hands over, explaining it's a case. The boys leave on the hunt, returning later to Ellen's praise, telling them their dad would have been proud. She tells the boys she has a couple of beds if they need a place to stay, but Dean turns her down, saying that he has something to finish.

Sam calls her in Bloodlust, and after assuring her they were fine, asked after Gordon Walker. Ellen tells Sam that he is a good hunter, but not to work with him because he is dangerous.

In All Hell Breaks Loose (Part 2), Ellen is first thought dead when Dean and Bobby arrive at the burned out Roadhouse. Later she shows up, shocked, at Bobby's, where after testing her she is confirmed human. She helps with the plan to defend the devil's gate, only Jake has the power to make her aim her gun at her head.

In the alternate reality of It's a Terrible Life, Dean Smith's mother is Ellen, his father is Bobby, and his sister is Jo.

In Heaven, the boys tell Ash that Ellen and Jo died fighting the good fight in Dark Side of the Moon.

In Caged Heat, Dean is outraged that Sam wants to work with Meg, after the demon's hellhounds got Jo and Ellen killed.

Ellen sends a message to Dean through a psychic museum curator in The Mentalists. She is concerned about Dean, and tells him, "If you don't tell someone how had it really is, she'll kick your ass from beyond. You have to trust someone again eventually."
