Pastor Jim Murphy is a pastor of a congregation in Blue Earth Minnesota, who is familiar with hunters and helps them. He is friends with John Winchester and has kept the boys Dean and Sam while they were growing up if John needed it. |

On April 6,2006 in Asylum, Sam Winchester calls Pastor Jim asking if he's heard from John Winchester. He hadn't, and so told Sam. Sam asks him to call them if he hears from John, before hanging up.
Pastor Jim is the backup plan if Dean doesn't hear from his dad John in a reasonable time frame while on a hunt. Dean would call him, and Pastor Jim would come and get the boys. (Something Wicked)
In Salvation, Thursday, July 13, 2006, Pastor Jim is reading the Bible standing behind the altar when a young blonde woman walks in. She wants to talk, so he joins her in the pews, to listen. She's not sure she could be forgiven. He assures her, "Salvation was created for sinners." She starts listing sins. When she tells him that she slit someone's throat and ripped his heart out, her eyes turn black and he recognizes her for what she is - a demon! He is shocked - they are on hallowed ground, but she is an upper level demon and that doesn't work with her. He races for his hunter's room downstairs, blockading the door to give himself a few more seconds to defend himself. When she kicks the door open, he throws his knife at her head which she dodges easily. She stalks him around the room, while telling him that she wants the Winchesters. But he hasn't spoken to John in over a year, and even if he knew he wouldn't tell her. She slices his neck with his knife, killing him almost instantly.
Meg kills him to help convince John Winchester to hand over the Colt.
