The night after Mary gets sick, Miles takes care of putting Bethany to bed, making sure to close the window. He woke up the next morning to find Bethany sick and in a coma, just like her older sister. The window was open. Bethany was taken to the hospital, and the doctor goes over questions with Miles to try to find a reason as to why the girls got sick.
A short while later, two gentlemen from the CDC came by to ask him questions about his daughters. He admits to thinking it was the open window, but he knows he closed it before he put Bethany to bed, so she must've opened it.
