PROLOGUE

EXT. BAR - NIGHT
"The House Is Rockin'" by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble starts playing.

Manning, Colorado
Present Day

A bar, with two separate "BEER" signs. There are a few patrons, and some old, beat up cars parked around. Sound of a motorcycle running from left to right.

INT. BAR - NIGHT
Shot of the bar covered in newspapers, someone's hands turning the pages of a hunter's journal.
Music:Well, the house is a-rockin' don't bother knockin'
Yeah, the house is a-rockin' don't bother knockin'
Yeah the house is a-rockin' don't bother come on in
Beth: (gently) Mr. Elkins?
Mr. Elkins is totally focused on the journal.
Music:Kick off your shoes, start losin' the blues
Beth: Mr. Elkins.
Music:This old house ain't got nothin' to lose
Beth: Would you like another?
Elkins looks up at her.
Music:Seen it all for years, start spreadin' the news
Elkins: Yeah. Thanks Beth.
Trucker: (to Beth) Thought they caught the Unabomber.
Music:We got room on the floor
Come on baby shake sumpin' loose
Beth: Yeah, poor Mr Elkins lives all alone, up the canyon.
Music:Well, the house is a-rockin'
Beth: Sits here every day, goin' through his papers, making his little notes.
Music:Don't bother knockin'
Yeah, the house is a-rockin' don't bother knockin'
Beth: He's a nice old man; (whispers) he's just a nut.
Music:Yeah the house is a-rockin' don't bother come on in
Beth pours another shot for Elkins.
Beth: Here you go.
Elkins looks up. Beth glances over. One woman, Kate, and three men enter the bar. They survey the room before moving to a table. Elkins watches them closely, glowering at them.
Beth: What'll you have?
Kate: Jack all around, leave the bottle.
Beth: You hungry?
Kate: We have dinner plans.
Beth: (whispers) Okay.
Trucker nods at Beth over their antics. Beth turns to grab a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red.
Beth: Can I get you something else, Mr. Elkins?
Music:Well, the house is a-rockin'
She turns to find his place empty, the door to the bar closing.

EXT. ELKINS CABIN - NIGHT
Shot of Elkins' cabin. Pickup drives up and parks. Elkins climbs out and hurries to the door, looking behind him as he struggles with the key. Once inside, he slams the door shut.

INT. ELKINS CABIN - NIGHT
Elkins dumps his newspapers and journal on the desk, then freezes. He slowly turns to see Kate from the bar.
Kate: It's been a while. I gotta say, you look old.
Her eyes flash silver.
Elkins: What do you want?
Kate: What do you think?
He throws a knife which hits the dead center of her chest.
Kate: Damn.
She looks down, and pulls the knife out.
Kate: You can do better than that.
Her eyes flash silver and she smiles before starting after him. Elkins hurries into the other room, locking the door and pushing a heavy bookcase across it. He opens a cupboard to reveal a safe and begins the combination.
Elkins: Come on, come on.
There is banging on the door. He removes a metal box from the safe and opens it to reveal an old-fashioned gun. He takes it apart to begin to load it. The banging continues, as the wood slowly splinters. The gun is loaded, and he puts it back together. Two men drop through the skylights and leap over the desk to grab Elkins. The gun falls to the floor. The door opens, knocking over the bookcase barricading the door. Kate walks through. The other two are pinning Elkins down. Kate picks the gun up from the floor and examines it. She smiles.
Kate: Nice gun. Wouldn't do you much good, of course. Boys, we're eating in tonight.
The men fall on Elkins. He screams.

Sam: Yeah.
Music:He said, Be careful what you wish for
It can turn down on you
Dean: Hey you know, we, uh, could just keep heading east. New York. Upstate. We could stop by and see Sarah again. (smirking) Huh? She's a cool chick man, smokin'.
Dean whistles.
Music:Things you think that mean the most are only something new
Dean: You two seemed pretty friendly. What do you say?
Music:It's never too late to start seeing how you life is passing by
Sam: Yeah, I dunno, maybe someday. But in the meantime, we got a lot of work to do Dean, and you know that.
Music:When you're walking down that golden road
Dean: Yeah you're right. What else you got?

Dean: Elkins? I know that name.
Sam: Doesn't ring a bell.
Dean: (under his breath) Elkins... Elkins... Elkins.
Dean reaches down to pull out John's journal.
Sam: Sounds like the police don't know what to think. At first they said it was some sort of... bear attack and now, they've found signs of robbery.
Credit:ANNE OPENSHAW (Kate)
Dean starts flipping through John's journal.
Dean: Mm-hmm.
Dean finds what he's looking for.
Dean: Here. Check it out.
Dean hands the journal to Sam and points. 'D Elkins 970-555-0158 Daniel Elkins'. Light dawns on Sam.
Sam: You think it's the same Elkins?
Dean: It's a Colorado area code.
Sam looks at Dean, who raises his eyebrows. Looks back at the journal. Scene fades out.

Sam: That looks a hell of a lot like Dad's.
Dean: Except this dates back to the '60s.
They continue to study it.

EXT. ELKINS CABIN - NIGHT
The cabin is standing in the woods. The camera angle changes to under the trees, and on the other side of a large tree is John Winchester, who is standing, looking at the cabin. A flashlight is shining in one window.

INT. ELKINS CABIN - NIGHT
Dean and Sam move into the other room and shine their flashlights around the destruction, including up at the hole in the skylights.
Sam: Whatever attacked him, it looks like there was more than one.
Dean: Looks like he put up a hell of a fight, too.
Sam: Yeah.
They look around the room. Dean half steps on a box that held the old fashioned gun. Dean carefully steps through the destruction. Sam is looking through the desk. Dean then notices something on the floor, and crouches to get a closer look.
Sam: You got somethin'?
Dean: I dunno. Some scratches on the floor.
Sam: Death throes maybe?
Dean: Yeah, maybe.
Dean grabs a page from a notebook, places it over the marks and rubs a pencil lead over it to get a rubbing. Dean peels up the paper, which has some blood on the back and the pencil rubbings, and looks at it.
Dean: Or maybe a message.
He hands the paper to Sam.
Dean: Look familiar?
Sam: Three letters, six digits. The location and combination of a post office box. It's a mail drop.
Dean: It's just the way Dad does it.
Sam looks at the paper; Dean looks up at Sam.

INT. POST OFFICE - NIGHT
Dean opens the post office box, Sam at his side. He removes a letter, stares, and shows it to Sam. They look at each other, confused. Dean looks back down at the letter.

INT. IMPALA - NIGHT
Sam: 'J.W.' You think? John Winchester?
Dean: I don't know. Should we open it?
There is a knock on Dean's window. Dean startles back gasping, automatically raising his arm, fist clenched. It's John Winchester. When John sees he has shocked them he smiles.
Dean: Dad?
Dean and Sam look at each other incredulously. John gets in the backseat.
Sam: Dad, what are you doing here? Are you all right?
John: Yeah, I'm okay. I read the news about Daniel. I got here as fast as I could. I saw you two up at his place.
Sam: Why didn't you come in, Dad?
John: You know why. Because I had to make sure you weren't followed... by anyone... or anything. Nice job of covering your tracks by the way.
Dean gives a slight smile.
Dean: Yeah, well, we learned from the best.
Sam: Wait, so you came all the way out here for this Elkins guy?
John: Yeah. He was... he was a good man. He taught me a hell of a lot about hunting.
Sam: You never mentioned him to us.
John: We had a... we had kind of a falling out. I hadn't seen him in years. I should look at that.
Dean hands the letter back to him. John opens it.
John: (reading) 'If you're reading this, I'm already dead'... That son of a bitch.
Dean: What is it?
John: He had it the whole time.
Sam: Dad, what?
John: When you searched the place, did you, did you see a gun? A-An antique, a Colt revolver. Did you see it?
Dean: Ah, there was, there was an old case, but it was empty.
John: They have it.
Dean: You mean whatever killed Elkins?
John starts to get out of the car.
John: We gotta pick up the trail.
John slams the door.
Sam: Wait. You want us to come with you?
Sam leans over, as both boys look up at John, who squats to talk with them through the driver's window.
John: If Elkins was telling the truth, we gotta find this gun.
Sam: The gun - why?
John: Because it's important, that's why.
Sam: Dad, we don't even know what these things are yet.
John: They were what Daniel Elkins killed best. Vampires.
Dean: Vampires? I thought there was no such thing.
Sam: You never even mentioned them, Dad.
John: I thought they were extinct. I thought Elkins and - and others had wiped 'em out.
Pause.
John: I was wrong.
Dean and Sam look at each other.

THE NEXT VICTIMS

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
"Trailer Trash" by 88 Crash starts playing. Vampires from earlier are drinking by a car.
John (voiceover): Most vampire lore is crap. A cross won't repel them. Sunlight won't kill them, and neither will a stake to the heart.
One vampire's eyes flash silver.
John: But the bloodlust, that part's true. They need fresh human blood to survive.
A car comes along the road toward the vampires.
John (voiceover): They were once people, so you won't know it's a vampire, until it's too late.
Kate throws away the empty bottle to smash on the road. Kate's eyes flash silver.
Kate: All yours, baby.
The camera pans over to a vampire, Beau, who slowly grins in anticipation.
The car is driving up the road in the dark.

INT. CAR - NIGHT
A young man drives, a young woman in the passenger seat. She looks over at him and chuckles. He glances at her, before focusing on the road.
Ted: What?
Jenny: Well I guess you showed that guy.
Ted: What guy?
Jenny: The guy that bet you wouldn't buy that shirt.
He turns to look at her.
Ted: I love this shirt.
Jenny shakes her head, smiling, and turns back to face the road. Ted continues smiling at her. She sees a man lying in the road.
Jenny: No! Look out!!
Ted slams on the brakes. After the car stops, they breathe heavily for a few breaths.
Jenny: What happened to him?
Ted: Call 911.
Ted goes to the vampire on the road as Jenny opens her phone. He turns Beau's face to him. Beau's eyes open, as does his mouth, and a mouthful of fangs descend from his gums. Ted yelps. Beau grabs him and pulls him down. The music stops and the screen goes black.

ACT TWO

STUDYING VAMPIRE LORE

INT. MOTEL - DAY
The camera pans across Dean and Sam sleeping peacefully in a motel room.
Dispatcher: Unit 22 let me confirm. Mile marker 41, abandoned car. You need a workup?
Man on Scene: Copy that. Possible 207. Better get forensics out here.
The camera stops on John, sitting at the table with a radio held in both hands. He puts it down, jumps to his feet and grabs his jacket. John slaps their feet as he calls their name.
John: Sam, Dean, let's go.
Dean is still asleep, but responds immediately.
Dean: Mm-hmm.
Sam half sits up. Dean starts rubbing his eyes. John puts his jacket on.
John: I picked up a police call.
Sam: What happened?
John: A couple called 911, found a body in the street. Cops got there, everyone was missing. It's the vampires.
Sam rises from the bed.
Sam: Uhh... How do you know?
John: Just... follow me, ok?
John leaves. Sam walks across the room, putting his jacket on. Dean, still half asleep, chuckles.
Dean: Vampires. Huh. Get's funnier every time I hear it.

EXT. ROAD - DAY
John finishes talking to a cop on the scene and starts walking back to the boys, waiting by the Impala.
Sam: (slightly sulky) I don't see why we couldn't have gone over with him.
Dean: Oh, don't tell me it's already starting.
Sam: What's starting?
Dean: (to John) What do ya got?
John: It was them all right. Looks like they're heading west. We'll have to double back to get around that detour.
Sam: How can you be so sure?
Dean: Sam...
Sam: (sharply to Dean) I just wanna know we're going in the right direction.
John: We are.
Sam: (confrontational) How do you know?
John pulls something out of his pocket and holds it up.
John: I found this.
Dean grabs it to look closer.
Dean: It's a... vampire fang.
John: Not fangs, teeth. The second set descends when they attack.
John looks at Sam challengingly.
John: Any more questions?
Sam looks away sulkily and stays silent.
John: All right, let's get out of here. We're losing daylight.
They start heading for their respective vehicles.
John: Hey Dean, why don't you touch up your car, before you get rust? I wouldn't have given you the damn thing, if I thought you were going to ruin it.
Dean looks down at his car. Sam looks at Dean with a 'Dad's on your case' look on his face. Dean tilts his head, as if to say, 'oh well'.

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - DAY
John's truck is leading the Impala.
Dean (voiceover): Vampires nest

INT. IMPALA - DAY
Sam is driving.
Dean: (reading) in groups of eight to ten. Smaller packs are sent out to hunt for food. Victims are taken to the nest where the pack keeps them alive, bleeding them for days or weeks. (stops reading) I wonder if that's what happened to that 911 couple?
Sam: (grumpily) That's probably what Dad's thinking. 'Course it would be nice if he just told us what he thinks.
Dean looks over at sulking Sam.
Dean: So it is starting.
Sam: What?
Dean: Sam, we've been looking for Dad all year. Now we're not with him for more than a couple of hours and there's static already?
Sam: Hmph. No. Look. I'm happy he's okay, all right? I'm happy that we're all working together again.
Dean: Well good.
Sam is unable to stop from speaking.
Sam: It's just the way he treats us, like we're children.
Dean: Oh God.
Sam: He-he barks orders at us, Dean. He expects us to follow 'em without question.
Dean: Sam.
Sam: He keeps us on some crap need-to-know deal.
Dean: He does what he does for a reason.
Sam: What reason?
Dean: Our job!
Sam makes a huff of disagreement.
Dean: There's no time to argue. There's no margin for error, all right? That's just the way the old man runs things.
Sam: Yeah, well, maybe that worked when we were kids but not anymore, all right? Not after everything you and I have been through, Dean. I mean, are you telling me you're cool with just falling into line, and letting him run the whole show?
Sam looks at Dean challengingly. Dean gives Sam a long look. He responds weakly, as if he is convincing himself.
Dean: If that's what it takes.
Sam can't believe he heard that. He shakes his head.

THE NEST

EXT. BARN. THE VAMPIRES' NEST - NIGHT
A shot of the barn. "Strange Face of Love" by Tito & Tarantula is playing.

INT. BARN. THE VAMPIRES' NEST - NIGHT
The vampires are partying, drinking and dancing. Jenny and her boyfriend are sitting tied to a pole.
Beau: Have some beer, buddy. It'll calm your nerves.
Ted: No thanks.
Beau: Aww, come on. You drink enough, I can taste it in your blood.
Kate walks up from the side.
Kate: That's gross.
Beau takes a swig, then squats down in front of Jenny.
Music:Let go of your love
Beau: How 'bout you babe?
Music:Ride his pulse and you'll forget
Beau waves the bottle in front of her face, then lifts the bottle to a shaky Jenny's mouth and forces her head up with it. She drinks. Beau smiles, as does Kate.
Music:Slow down your time will come
Beau: Atta girl.
Music:If not tonight surely by the dawn
Jenny spits it back in his face. Beau wipes it with his sleeve then lifts his arm to backhand her.
Music:Just take it like a man
Kate: Beau! Wait for Luther.
Music:The strange face of love
Beau glares at shaking Jenny, and then walks away. The barn doors open and the Luther walks in, backlit by headlights from a car outside the barn.
Music:A cat's eye, a lizard's tail
Kate smiles, runs and jumps into his arms. They kiss, and moan.
Music:The pentagram he bought in hell
He stalks the night with no intent
Luther: I missed you too, baby.
Music:His brow sweats for innocence
Kate: We got presents.
Luther walks over and strokes a shaking Jenny's face.
Music:Take it like a man
Luther: She looks interesting. Hmm.
Music:The strange face of love
Luther grabs Ted's face.
Music:Don't look back, don't look back
Luther: He doesn't. Lock him up.
Vampire: Let's go.
Music:He's right on your tail
The other vamps pull Ted to his feet.
Luther: On second thought - go ahead and treat yourself.
Music:Don't look back, don't look back
The vamps laugh, excited.
Vampire: Yeah!
They throw Ted down and fall on him. Ted screams. Jenny sobs, terrified, as she's trying to pull on her ropes.
Kate: (to Luther) There's something else.
She leads him smilingly to the bar where cash and silver are heaped.
Luther: This all theirs?
Kate: (smiling) No. It's from an old friend of yours, Daniel Elkins. I caught his scent, and I thought I'd surprise you.
Luther: (concerned) Kate, what did you do?
Kate: I made him suffer.
Luther: You shouldn't have done that.
Kate: Luther-
Luther: There's others like him. They'll know the signs and come looking for us. We have to be careful.
Kate: Luther, I did it for you, for what he did to your family.
Luther: Revenge isn't worth much if you end up dead.
A moment's pause.
Kate: I'm sorry babe. I'm sorry.
Luther picks up the gun.
Kate: I thought you might like that. It looks like it was made around the time you were born.
Luther: I've seen this before.
Kate: Elkins died with it in his hands. He should have known better. Using a gun.
Luther: This is no ordinary gun.
Luther looks off into space, thinking.

FIGHTING AGAIN

INT. IMPALA - NIGHT
Sam is driving. Dean is on the phone.
Dean: Yeah Dad. All right, got it.
Dean hangs up.
Dean: Pull off the next exit.
Sam gets angry.
Sam: Why?
Dean: 'Cause Dad thinks we've got the vampire's trail.
Sam become even more angered.
Sam: How?
Dean: I don't know. He didn't say.
Sam guns the engine, Dean looks at him like he's crazy. Dean turns to look at John's truck as Sam overtakes it and passes it.

EXT. IMPALA - NIGHT
Once in front Sam slams on the brakes, causing the Impala to swerve sideways in front of John's truck. They both stop.

INT. IMPALA - NIGHT
Dean: Oh crap. Here we go.
Sam gets out of the car.
Dean: Sam!
Dean follows out of the car.

EXT. IMPALA - NIGHT
Sam and John, who is also out of his truck, are both looking angry.
John: What the hell was that?
Sam: We need to talk.
John comes to a halt face to face with Sam.
John: About what?
Sam: About everything. Where we going Dad? What's the big deal about this gun?
Dean: Sammy, come on, we can Q and A after we kill all the vampires.
John: Your brother's right. We don't have time for this.
Sam: Last time we saw you, you said it was too dangerous for us to be together. (yelling) Now out of the blue, you need our help. Now obviously somethin' big is going down, and we wanna know what!
John: Get back in the car.
Sam: No.
John: I said get back in the damn car.
Sam: Yeah. And I said no.
Dean is hovering.
Dean: Okay, you made your point tough guy. Look we're all tired, we can talk about this later. Sammy, I mean it, come on.
Dean grabs Sam and pushes him back toward the car. Sam goes reluctantly, looking at John until he turns to climb in.
Sam: (mumbles) This is why I left in the first place.
John: What'd you say?
Sam swings back.
Sam: You heard me.
John: Yeah. You left. Your brother and me, we needed you. You walked away, Sam. (yelling) You walked away!!
Dean: Stop it, both of you.
Sam: (yelling) You're the one who said don't come back, Dad! You closed that door, not me. You were just pissed off that you couldn't control me anymore!
Dean forces them apart.
Dean: Listen, stop it, stop it. (yelling) Stop it!! That's enough!!
Sam and John stare at each other, furious, over Dean's head. Dean gets in front of John, crowding him.
Dean: That means you too.
Sam gets into the Impala. John turns back to his truck. Dean stands in the middle, alone. He looks from one to the other. He throws out his arms in frustration, talking to the night air.
Dean: Terrific.

INT. BARN VAMPIRES NEST - NIGHT
Kate and a half naked Luther get it on against the bar. Jenny is still tied up, trying not to watch as Luther removes Kate's shirt. They both turn to look at Jenny.
Luther: You like to watch, huh? Me too. (to Kate) Ready baby?
They kiss. Kate slides off the bar, and Luther follows Kate over to Jenny. Kate runs her fingers through Jenny's hair.
Jenny: (sobbing) Are you going to kill me?
Kate: I'm going to take you so high, you're never going to come down.
Luther grabs Kate's arm up. She stands. He cuts Kate's arm with his knife. Kate sucks on it then goes to Jenny, forcibly kissing her and forcing blood into her mouth as Luther watches. Afterwards, both girls have vampire blood smeared over their mouths, as Jenny's labored breathing evens out. Luther puts his hand on Jenny's head.
Luther: Welcome home, baby.
Luther looks down at Jenny. The screen goes black.

ACT THREE

PREPARING

EXT. VAMPIRES NEST - DAY
Seen from behind the tree. A beat up Camaro pulls in. Beau climbs out of the Camaro. Luther, in a t-shirt and tan pants, comes out to meet it, holding the door open and shading his eyes from the sun. Beau heads for the barn door.
Beau: (to Luther) I know what time it is.
Luther: Get in.
Beau walks in. Luther looks around then goes back inside.
Dean, Sam and John are hiding in the trees, watching the barn.

Dean: (offscreen) Son of a bitch.
Dean: So they're really not afraid of the sun?
John: Ahh, direct sunlight hurts like a nasty sunburn. The only way to kill 'em, is by beheading. And yeah, they sleep during the day. Doesn't mean they won't wake up.
Dean: So I guess walking right in's not our best option.
John: Actually, that's the plan.

EXT. IMPALA - DAY
Dean opens the trunk and the the wheel well where the weapons are stored. John opens an automatic hidden weapon compartment that slides from the back of his truck. The boys weapon up, as John does the same. Dean looks over.
Dean: Dad, I've got an extra machete if you need one.
Dean holds it up but John unveils a massive shiny serrated edge machete from a leather holder.
John: I think I'm okay. Thanks.
Dean and Sam check it out.
Dean: Wow.
The boys go back to arming themselves again. John leans against his truck, thinking.
John: So... you boys really wanna know about this Colt?
Both boys look over, surprised, at their father. Long pause. Dean looks to Sam.
Sam: Yes sir.
John: It's just a story, a legend really.
Dean, then Sam, walk over to hear John's story.
John: Well, I thought it was. Never really believed it until I read Daniel's letter...
Scene fade out.

INT. COLT HOUSE - NIGHT
Scene fade in. A man making the gun and numbered bullets, pouring molten lead and carving a devil's trap into the handle.
John (voiceover): Back in 1835, when Halley's Comet was overhead, the same night those men died at the Alamo, they say Samuel Colt made a gun. A special gun. He made it for a hunter. A man like us, only on horseback. Story goes, he made thirteen bullets. This hunter used the gun a half dozen times before he disappeared, the gun along with him. 'Til somehow Daniel got his hands on it.
The gun is laid carefully on a cloth.
John (voiceover): They say...
Scene fades out.

EXT. JOHN'S TRUCK - DAY
Scene fades in. John is telling Dean and Sam the story.
John: They say this gun can kill anything.
Dean: Kill anything, like supernatural, anything?
Sam: Like the demon.
John: Yeah, the demon. Ever since I picked up its trail, I've been looking for a way to destroy that thing. Find the gun. We may have it.
Conviction strengthens both Dean and Sam.

FIRST TRY

INT. BARN. VAMPIRE'S NEST - DAY
A barn window swings inwards. John jumps through and runs in. Sam follows more careful, then Dean. Dean closes the window. The boys survey the room. Vampires are sleeping in hammocks. All is quiet.

John walks through and looks into the stalls.

Dean and Sam make their way through the barn, looking at the sleeping vampires. As Dean passes one hammock he kicks an empty bottle on the ground, and it clinks. Dean looks back up into the hammock, but the vampire doesn't wake.

At the back of the barn John finds Kate and Luther asleep on a bed in an alcove.

Sam finds Jenny, with blood on her shirt, tied up against the pole, sleeping or unconscious.
Sam: (whispering) Dean.
Dean looks, and makes his way cautiously over.

John looks the room over. The gun hangs in a holster beside the sleeping couple. He slowly makes his way down a few steps to the bed. Luther, then Kate, turns over in their sleep.

Sam begins to untie Jenny. They hear a noise. Dean looks behind them.
Dean: There's more.
Dean makes his way to a locked metal grid. Inside people are tied up, also sleeping or unconscious. Dean checks out the lock on the door. He grabs a metal hook to break the hinge. Sam looks up sharply at the noise and they look over to the hammocks. There is slight sounds of disturbed sleep, but no one wakes up. Dean and Sam relax. Sam goes back to untying Jenny, and Dean goes back to breaking the hinge again.

John approaches the gun.

Jenny, tied up against the pole, begins to stir.
Sam: (whispers) Hey.
Jenny moans.
Sam: Hey, hey. Shh. I'm here to help you.
Jenny: (unearthly roar) No!
Sam rears back, Dean looks around. The vampires wake.
Dean: Sam!
Sam jumps back, looking at Jenny, pulling out the machete.

John turns toward the noise. Jenny screams again. Beside him Luther and Kate wake. Luther rears up and throws John against the wall. Jenny screams again, faintly. John grabs a bottle and hurls it at the blackened window, letting in the daylight. Luther and Kate turn to look at the window and flinch away.

John: (offscreen) Boys, run!
Dean and Sam run. Vampires fall out of the hammocks.
Dean: Dad!
The vampires give chase.

EXT. VAMPIRE NEST - DAY
Dean and Sam burst out the barn doors into the daylight and run up the slope to the cars before pausing to look back.
Dean: Dad?
Nothing.
Dean: Dad!
After a long pause John comes running up the slope. As soon as they see him the boys turn to run more.
John: They won't follow.
They pause, and turn back to listen to John.
John: They'll wait till tonight. Once a vampire gets your scent, it's for life.
Dean: What the hell do we do now?
John: You gotta find the nearest funeral home, that's what.
The boys look at him, confused, then at each other.

SAM AND JOHN TALK

INT. MOTEL ROOM - DAY
Sam paces, John sits at the table.
Sam: It shouldn't be taking this long. I should go help.
John: Dean's got it.
John watches Sam pace.
John: Sammy.
Sam stops pacing.
Sam: Yeah.
John: I don't think I ever told you this but... the day you were born, you know what I did?
John smiles slightly. Sam is confused.
Sam: No.
John: I put a hundred bucks into a savings account for you. I did the same thing for your brother. It was a college fund. And every month I'd put in another hundred dollars, until... Anyway my point is, Sam, that... this is never the life that I wanted for you.
Sam: Then why'd you get so mad when I left?
John: You gotta understand somethin'. After your mother passed, all I saw was evil. Everywhere. And all I cared about was... was keeping you boys alive. I wanted you... prepared. Ready. 'Cept somewhere along the line I, uh... I stopped being your father and I... I became your, your drill sergeant.
Sam slowly starts walking over.
John: So when you said that you wanted to go away to school, all I could think about - my only thought was-
Sam sits down across from John.
John: that you were gonna be alone. Vulnerable. Sammy, it just... it never occurred to me what you wanted. I just couldn't accept the fact that you and me... We're just different.
Sam laughs, ducking his head.
John: What?
Sam is fighting tears.
Sam: We're not different. Not anymore. With what happened to Mom and Jess...
Sam shakes his head, then laughs again.
Sam: Hell, we probably have a lot more in common than just about anyone.
John gives a sad smile.
John: I guess you're right, son.
Sam: Hey Dad? Whatever happened to that college fund?
John: Spent it on ammo.
They look at each other. Sam cracks up and so does John. Dean enters.
Dean: Whew. Man, some heavy security to protect a bunch of dead guys.
John: Get it?
Dean fumbles in his pocket, withdrawing a paper bag and from that a bottle full of something red. He hands it to John. John smiles.
John: You know what to do.
John places the bottle of blood on the desk.

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
Dean leans over the open bonnet of the Impala, looking at the engine.
Kate: (offscreen) Car trouble?
Dean turns to see Kate.
Kate: Let me give you a lift. I'll take you back to my place.
Dean: (grinning) Nah, I'll pass. I usually draw the line at necrophilia.
Kate: Oooh.
She backhands him. Dean puts up a hand on his face, groaning. Another vamp, Hank, approaches. She grabs Dean's face and lifts him into the air as he groans. Dean grabs her wrist.
Dean: Oh. Ah. I don't normally get this friendly 'til the second date, but...
Dean chuckles.
Kate: You know, we could have some fun. I always like to make new friends.
She lowers him to her level and kisses him, still holding his cheeks tightly. She moans.
Hank watches, smiling.

Dean: Oh. Whuf. Sorry. I don't always stay with a chick that long. Definitely not eternity.
An arrow pierces Hank's back. A second later the same happens to Kate. She turns loose of Dean.
Dean: Ah.
Kate looks down at the point sticking out of her chest.
Kate: Dammit.
John and Sam emerge from the trees carrying crossbows. When Sam takes up his position, his machete is raised over Hank.
Kate: It barely even stings.
John: Give it time sweetheart. That arrow's soaked in dead man's blood. It's like poison to you inn't it?
John smiles at her. Kate looks shocked, then wavers and loses consciousness. Dean catches her on the way down.
John: Load her up.
Dean picks her up.
John: I'll take care of this one.
John pulls out his machete. John nods for Sam to follow Dean. Sam backs up, turning to follow Dean. John approaches Hank who is sitting groggily on the ground. Raising his machete, he brings it down. Blood sprays over a boulder. The screen goes black.

ACT FOUR

PREPARING AGAIN

EXT. OUTSIDE - NIGHT
John hands Dean a bag and they move from the truck's trunk back toward the campfire where Sam is patrolling with a machete.
John: Toss this on the fire. Saffron, skunk's cabbage and trillium. It'll block our scent and hers, until we're ready.
Dean sniffs it and coughs.
Dean: This stuff stinks.
John: That's the idea. Dust your clothes with the ashes. You stand a chance of not being detected.
Sam: You sure they'll come after her?
John: Yeah. Vampires mate for life.
Kate starts to stir.
John: She means more to the leader than the gun. But the blood sickness is going to wear off soon, so you don't have a lot of time.
Sam: A half hour oughta do it.
John: And then I want you out of the area as fast as you can.
Sam: But...
Dean: Well, Dad you can't take care of them all yourself.
John: I'll have her. And the Colt.
Sam: But after. We're gonna meet up, right? Use the gun together. Right?
Dean and Sam look at John. Long pause. John doesn't face them.
Sam: You're leaving again, aren't you?
Sam shakes his head.
Sam: You still wanna go after the demon alone.
John finally looks back at Sam.
Sam: You know, I don't get you. You can't treat us like this.
John: Like what?
Sam: Like children.
John: You are my children. I'm trying to keep you safe.
Dean has had enough.
Dean: Dad, all due respect but, uh, that's a bunch of crap.
Sam and John both look at Dean, shocked.
John: Excuse me?
Dean: You know what Sammy and I have been huntin'. Hell you sent us on a few hunting trips yourself.
Dean chuckles.
Dean: You can't be that worried about keepin' us safe.
John: It's not the same thing, Dean.
Dean: Then what is it? Why do you want us out of the big fight?
John: This demon? It's a bad son of a bitch. I can't make the same moves. I'm worried about keepin' you alive.
Dean: You mean you can't be as reckless.
John: Look... I don't expect to make it out of this fight in one piece. Your mother's death... it almost killed me. I can't watch my children die, too. I won't.
Dean: What happens if you die? Dad, what happens if you die, and we coulda done somethin' about it? You know I been thinkin'. I... think maybe Sammy's right about this one. I think we should do this together.
Sam nods. Dean's near tears.
Dean: We're stronger as a family, Dad. We just are. You know it.
John: We're running out of time. You do your job and you get out of the area. That's an order.
Dean looks down, upset. Sam clenches his jaw, feeling frustrated.

SECOND TRY

EXT. OUTSIDE VAMPIRE NEST - NIGHT
A car pulls up to where Luther and the others are waiting. The headlights show Luther's eyes as silver. Beau climbs out and heads towards them, upset.
Luther: Is there any sign of those three?
Beau: No. Something else.
Luther: What?!
Beau: Luther, they cut off Hank's head!
Luther: And Kate?
Beau: I don't know. She wasn't there.
Beau pants a bit.
Beau: What are we gonna do?
The noise of a vehicle distracts them.
Beau: It's just a truck up on the highway.
Luther: (whispers) Kate. She's in that truck.

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
John's truck travels down the road.

INT. JOHN'S TRUCK - NIGHT
Kate sluggishly opens and closes her eyes in the passenger seat. John glances over at her, before focusing on the road. After a moment headlights shine in the rearview mirror. Two cars approach John's truck quickly from behind. John glances back, then forward again.

EXT. BARN. VAMPIRE NEST - NIGHT
A shot of the barn. All is quiet

INT. BARN. VAMPIRE NEST - NIGHT
Beau swigs from a bottle. There is a noise. Looking up, he moves to stand in front of the barn doors, considers them a moment, then shrugs and takes another swig. He turns to find Dean Winchester behind him.
Dean: Boo.
Dean swings his machete down hard on Beau's neck.

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
John's truck is still being followed by two cars.

INT. JOHN'S TRUCK - NIGHT
John is still driving, keeping ahead of the cars. John looks in the rear-view mirror. He turns completely around to check, but the cars have disappeared.

INT. BARN. VAMPIRE NEST - NIGHT
Dean makes his way back to the locked container of people. He grabs the cage, making noise to get their attention.
Dean: I told you I'd come back.
He begins breaking the hinges using a lever.

EXT. SIDE OF ROAD - NIGHT
John's truck is racing along.

INT. JOHN'S TRUCK - NIGHT
Camera angle shows the road ahead of the truck.

EXT. SIDE OF ROAD - NIGHT
The road is blocked by Luther, Jenny, two other vampires, and two cars. John stops the truck.
Luther: Get out!
John exits the truck, but stands next to the open door.
Luther: Who are you?
John: Name's Winchester.
Luther: Where are your friends?
John: Cleaning out your nest.
Luther smiles tightly.
Luther: Where's Kate?
John: Come here sweetheart.
He pulls a rope attached to a groggy and tied up Kate. She stumbles out, and John grabs her to hold her tight with his left arm. His right hand holds a machete to her throat. He slowly walks towards Luther so he can see Kate.
Luther: Kate, you all right?
Kate: Dead man's blood.
Luther: (whispers) You son of a bitch.
John: I want the Colt. Elkins' gun. Trade.
Luther: Is that what this is all about? I mean, you can't shoot us all, right? We'll kill you.
John: Oh, I don't need it for you. I'm saving it for somethin' else. Put the Colt down, or she goes first.
Luther: All right. Just don't hurt her.
Luther walks forward, pulling the Colt out of his back. He places the Colt on the ground and stands up. John eyes the Colt on the ground.
John: Back up.
Luther opens his arms, and backs up slightly.
John: Further.
Luther backs all the way up next to his vampires. John drags Kate forward and leans down with her to pick up the gun. Kate works at the ties around her wrists.
Luther: (to John) It's a nice move. You almost made it.
Kate swings around, knocking John back against the front grill of his truck. He drops the gun and machete. Luther approaches, pulling John up before backhanding John against his open truck door, shattering the window glass before he lands unconscious on the ground. Luther approaches again.
An arrow pierces one of the vampires. Dean and Sam run out of the trees; Dean pauses to line up and shoot another vampire with his crossbow. Sam moves toward Luther who backhands him down on the ground, before grabbing Sam to yank him up. Dean runs to grab John's dropped machete and turns to help, but Luther has his arm around Sam's throat.

Luther: Don't! I'll break his neck. Put the blade down.
For a moment Dean does nothing. Luther tightens his hold on Sam's neck, cutting off his air supply completely. Sam makes some noises of gasping for air. Dean eyes the vampire with hate, before he drops the machete.
Luther: You people. Why can't you leave us alone? We have as much right to live as you do.
John: (from behind) I don't think so.
Luther turns, still holding Sam in a chokehold. John raises the Colt and shoots him between the eyes. A spiderweb of black appears around the bullet hole. Luther lets go of Sam who stumbles away, gasping, and Dean pulls Sam behind him. A glowing area appears where the bullet hit Luther, along with a thin trail of blood. John watches closely to see what the Colt would do. Kate and Jenny stand off to the side, watching. A brief flash of light reflects his skeleton and blows his hair back, causing him to waver where he stands, before he falls to his knees.
Kate cries out in horror.

Kate: Lutherrrr!!!!
Dean and Sam watch, unbelieving. Luther half falls forward, but catches himself on his hands. Another flash of light passes through Luther from the bullet and he falls face first to the ground, dead. Dean looks up at John, who returns the look with satisfaction. Kate starts toward John, breathing heavily.
Jenny: Kate, don't!
Jenny grabs her, pulling her to their car. They take off, wheels screaming. The three look at each other in stunned shock. John smiles in satisfaction.
The screen goes black.

ACT FIVE

ORDERS

INT. MOTEL ROOM - NIGHT
Dean and Sam are packing. John enters.
John: So boys.
They turn, slowly lining up to face John.
Sam: (whispers) Yes sir.
John: You ignored a direct order back there.
Sam: Yes sir.
Dean: Yeah, but we saved your ass.
Sam's eyes slide sideways at Dean, nervously. John looks steadily at Dean. Dean swallows.
John: You're right.
Dean is surprised.
Dean: I am?
John: It scares the hell out of me. You two are all I've got. But I guess we are stronger as a family.
John nods. Theme music starts. Dean's thrilled.
John: So... we go after this damn thing. Together.
Dean and Sam (together): Yes sir.
Sam smiles in satisfaction. Dean's satisfied. John gives a slight smile.
